Tattoo Tales: The Tattoo That Wouldn’t Heal

Some tattoos fade. Some last forever. And some? Some refuse to heal.

She came in like any other client—early 30s, quiet but polite, a little nervous. Said she wanted a simple black-ink symbol on her wrist. Nothing flashy. Nothing big. Just something she had dreamed about.

I nodded. “What’s the meaning behind it?”

Her fingers tensed. “I don’t really know. It just… came to me.”

That should’ve been my first red flag.

But I’ve tattooed plenty of people who didn’t have deep explanations for their ink. So I stenciled it out, got the placement right, and got to work.

She barely spoke the whole session. Just stared at the design as I worked, like she was memorizing every line.

It wasn’t anything I recognized—sharp angles, looping curves—but hey, people bring in all kinds of designs.

An hour later, she paid, thanked me, and left. Simple. Routine. Done.

Or so I thought.

Two weeks later, she was back.

She rolled up her sleeve and my stomach dropped.

The tattoo looked wrong.

The ink was still raised like it was fresh. But worse? The lines had shifted. Twisted. Like the design had been moving. The edges weren’t crisp anymore—they bled outward in jagged directions, stretching across her skin.

“I did everything right,” she whispered. “I followed aftercare exactly. It just… won’t heal.”

I ran a gloved hand over it. No sign of infection. No scabbing. Just wrong.

“Has this happened before?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No. But ever since I got it, I’ve been having the same dream.”

I hesitated. “What dream?”

Her voice dropped. “It’s dark. And I can’t move. And something is… watching me.”

A chill crawled down my spine.

She looked up, desperate. “Can you fix it? Cover it?”

I nodded. I tried.

I layered darker ink over it, reshaped the lines, filled in the stretched edges. It should’ve worked. It should have.

She left again, thanking me. I told her to check in if anything changed.

A week later, my phone rang. No caller ID.

I answered. Silence. Then her whisper:

It came back.

...That was the last time I ever heard from her. She never came back. No emails. No calls. Nothing. I don’t know what happened to her.

But sometimes, when I’m in the shop late at night, I swear I see that symbol in the corner of my eye.

And every time I look, it’s already gone.
