Ink for the Dark Season: Why October Is Made for Blackwork
October hits different in the chair. 🍂
The light changes, the air cools off, and every year the same thing happens: people start asking for the dark stuff. Blackwork. Heavy black saturation. Imagery with teeth — Cthulhu, reapers, dark religious pieces, black-and-grey work that looks like it was carved instead of drawn.
Here's the part most people don't think about: October isn't just the mood for it — it's the smartest time of year to start it.
Why fall heals better
A big dark piece is an investment, and healing is where you protect it. Fall stacks the deck in your favor:
🧥 Long sleeves cover healing ink — your piece heals under a shirt or hoodie instead of blazing in the sun
☀️ The sun backs off — UV is the number one killer of tattoos, and fresh blackwork is the most vulnerable to it
🏊 No pools, no lakes, no soaking — summer's swim season is over, so there's nothing pulling you into water you shouldn't be in while you heal
🌡️ Less sweat, less friction — cooler days are simply easier on fresh work than a 100-degree Tracy afternoon
Start a sleeve in October and by the time short sleeves come back, it's settled, healed, and ready to show.
What "dark season" work looks like
This is the time of year for the pieces I love most:

Blackwork and dark imagery — occult, horror, and mythological pieces with heavy black
Black-and-grey storytelling sleeves — Aztec, religious, and memorial work that reads like a mural
Cover-ups — old faded ink disappears easiest under a bold dark piece, and fall gives it time to heal before anyone sees the reveal
If you've been sitting on a big idea, this is the window. One session now, healed by the holidays, next session booked before the calendar fills.
Heal it like you mean it
Dark pieces pack a lot of black into the skin, and that makes aftercare non-negotiable. Wash it right, soothe it right, keep it out of the sun — that's the whole game. It's why I partnered with Mad Rabbit for the studio's aftercare: it's what's going on your skin after I finish, and it's what I use on my own work.
Use my code TATTOOTONY20 for 20% off if you need to stock up before your session.
And for the artists reading: the business behind the art needs protecting too. Alternative Balance is insurance built for tattoo studios — it's who I trust on that side of the chair.
Book the dark piece
I'm in the studio Tuesday through Saturday in Tracy, and October/November dates are the ones everybody wants for exactly this reason. If the dark piece has been in your head all year, let's get it on skin.
